Terminator 2: Ultimate vs. Extreme
Info: dvd.ign.com
IGN reports: Next week Artisan will release the third edition of Terminator 2: Judgment Day on DVD. The first T2 disc was a bare bones release from Live back in 1997, and the second was Artisan's excellent Ultimate Edition that was released not too long ago.
Why a new version? Well there's a third Terminator movie about to hit theaters, and despite the wealth of extras on the Ultimate Edition, the film could've looked better. Since a 1080p High Def master was recently created for the film it presented the chance of revisiting the film on DVD to provide the best-looking version of T2 yet.
The result is this Extreme Edition
Produced by DVD master producer Van Ling (who did T2: UE, The Abyss, both Star Wars DVDs, and many others), the two-disc set gives us the perfect anamorphic widescreen transfer of Terminator 2, a strong Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track, and the first scene-specific commentary track from James Cameron (previous commentaries were just edited together from interviews).
As with the two different DVD releases of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, no extras are duplicated between the two sets. In fact, the special features on this new Extreme Edition seem to be made to compliment the Ultimate Edition. That stunning set delivered everything you could possibly want to know about T2. This new release features an excellent documentary that looks back at the movie and reflects on the impact that it had in the world of visual effects. You even hear from Peter Jackson as he comments how T2 affected his path towards making The Lord of the Rings.
In this head-to-head we'll look at the packaging, menus, transfer, and finally the extras.
